What is a Content Management System?

files.jpgA content management system (CMS) is simply a system used to manage the content of a web site.  While many traditional web sites are developed in html or may be pages that leverage some features of a database, content a CMS is usually database-driven.  The system manages the web content, electronic files, image media and audio files.  Intelligent DeZigns uses systems with custom-developed templates that provide a consistent look and feel of the web site.
While the initial setup of CMS sites requires a developer & designer with an advanced skill set, the benefits to the customer and web site users are readily apparent.  For the user, the site is organized with a professional layout and intuitive menu structures.  Some CMS-based sites (for example, The Bread Ladies ) allow user registration.  This provides the added benefit of having content that is only available to registered users that can also include social networking functions similar to MySpace and FaceBook

For the web site owner, there are several advantages as well.  A CMS allows some of the site content to be added or updated from an on-line interface. For a business that requires frequent changes and updates, this allows the site to be changed conveniently. The content on the front page of the site can be rearranged with just a few clicks in the administrative interface. There are several features that can be added to the CMS for event calendars, video players, slide shows, and community building programs for registered users.  With user registration, the business can also develop mailing lists to send newsletters and updates to their users directly from the CMS and the users will be able to manage their subscriptions through their accounts.
